Indigenous Engagement Policy
Polaris recognizes the significance of Indigenous rights and the importance of building relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities. To support this recognition, Polaris has established a comprehensive Indigenous Engagement Policy.The foundation of our policy is founded on the following four principles:
- Leadership Action
- Education and Training
- Business Development
- Community Relationships
As set forth in Polaris’ Indigenous Engagement Policy, Polaris is committed to building relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities. We see the benefit Polaris can bring to Indigenous communities by providing opportunities, sharing prosperity, and building trust. We listen, engage, and build relationships, while believing that our positive actions and meaningful initiatives will have long term, positive impacts on advancing reconciliation.
Polaris is committed to hiring local Indigenous talent for our projects where practical and when Indigenous services are available.
Polaris’ commitment and approach to obtaining Indigenous resources is to:
- Initiate contact with nearby and/or impacted communities for the purpose of recruitment and procuring local business services.
- Provide opportunities for Indigenous workers to receive technical and on-the-job training.
- Support secondary education programs and employee development programs.
- Identify Indigenous businesses capable of providing goods and services applicable to Polaris’ scope of work on the projects.
- Ensure Polaris, our employees, and contractors are involved with community events, sponsorship, or volunteer opportunities.
- Strive to be a company that is accepted as part of the Indigenous community where relationships have been built.
The recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a statutory holiday for all employees.
1.0 Overview
Polaris recognizes the significance of Indigenous rights and the importance of building relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities. To support this recognition, Polaris has established an Indigenous Engagement Policy to build meaningful, prosperous relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities.2.0 Definitions
Polaris: Refers to Polaris Engineering Ltd. providing complete EPCM services to the Energy IndustryIndigenous: Persons of North American Aboriginal ancestry. Including First Nations (status and non-status), Inuit and Métis. These are three distinct peoples with unique histories, languages, cultural practices, and spiritual beliefs.
3.0 Four Principles
3.1 Leadership Actions
+ Provide the framework to sustain a corporate culture focused on positive Indigenous relations.Consistently pursue actions that focus on creating mutually beneficial opportunities for Indigenous people and communities.
Provide employees and contractors with educational opportunities and additional resources related to Indigenous people and their culture.
Communicate the Indigenous Engagement Policy to all employees and contractors.
3.2 Education and Training
+ Work closely with Indigenous people and communities to involve them in the development of skilled workers.Develop recruitment plans focused on attracting Indigenous employees.
Provide opportunity for Indigenous workers to receive technical and on-the-job training, post-secondary education programs, and employee development programs.
Provide employees and contractors opportunities for cultural awareness training to support equitable representation of Indigenous people in the workplace.
3.3 Business Development
+ Identify potential partnerships, joint ventures, and collaborations with Indigenous people, communities, and businesses.Establish programs and incentives to identify, utilize, and track spending for Indigenous-owned businesses.
Provide capacity-building opportunities for Indigenous-owned businesses.
3.4 Community Relationships
Provide time and resources to develop and sustain positive and progressive relationships with Indigenous people and communities.Provide financial and/or in-kind support to Indigenous groups and initiatives focused on improving the quality of life for their respective communities.
Strive to be a company that is accepted as part of the Indigenous community where relationships have been built.
4.0 Commitment
Polaris is committed to building relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities. This commitment is a shared responsibility by Polaris, our employees, and contractors. This commitment begins with our leadership team providing the guiding principles and resources, and the remaining staff to support implementation, provide feedback and the improvisation of the policy.Polaris recognizes that this policy is a working document that requires continual review and updates to ensure it remains relevant and meets any changing needs.
